Why Debrecen?

Debrecen is the second largest town in Hungary. It is the cultural, educational, economic and political centre of Eastern Hungary. Debrecen is a vibrant university town with traditions in higher education dating back to the 16th century. It offers to its 30000 strong student population excellent shopping, cultural and sports venues, a good collection of bars, restaurants and clubs. The city centre and the university area offers a relaxing but truly urban environment. Debrecen prides itself of its modern arts gallery (MODEM), its often progressive theatre, its offer in live classical, jazz and modern (pop, rock, indie, hip-hop) music, and its numerous festivals. Everyone can find a program of his own liking.
Staying in Debrecen provides an excellent opportunity to discover Central and Eastern Europe. Budapest is only 2 and a half hours away by train leaving and arriving daily in every hour. The UNESCO World Heritage Hortobágy National Park 30 kilometres from Debrecen is a place of no parallels. The Northern Great Plain Region and Debrecen is especially famous for its numerous and affordable spas and thermal baths inviting visitors to take part in this great Hungarian pastime. The Romanian border is only 30 minutes away tempting visitors to explore the mystic Transylvania. Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Serbia, Croatia are in close reach. Debrecen has a direct train connection to Kiev (Ukraine) and Moscow (Russia).

Life in Debrecen is generally affordable. There is a wide range of university and private accommodation with the most modern halls of residence on the Social Sciences Campus (Kassai Street Campus) where the Faculty of Law is situated. The halls of residences of the university offer modern, refurbished double and single rooms with cable television and Wi-Fi in the rooms, a well equipped gym reserved for students. Next to the Social Sciences Campus is the city swimming pool with an Olympic size pool. The Social Sciences Campus and the other campuses of the university are the liveliest spots in town. There is an active and diverse foreign student population at the university.
